How do you live a life forever?
If you belong to generation X, this might apply to you. If you belong to generation Y or the mythical Z, it most certainly does. The question is, are we already seeing the effects without even knowing it, and what would be the cause?
“This”, of course, being the likelyhood of advancements in science (biological & technical) in effect creating the opportunity for some to live forever.
How do you live a life forever? How do you live your life forever? What’s your current “grand plan”?
[be born – go to school – “do youth stuff and then grow up” – find a job – find a partner – settle down – get kids] … REPEAT
“her plan is to have more than one plan” – Generation Y gets a job
It’s not just about having more than one job. It’s likely about having more than one “life”. It’s not even surprising, divorces have been on the rise in the lazy (the developed) parts of the world for quite some time, indicating that our lifespans are already long enough for us to not be able/want to keep in sync with one single partner. With an ever increasing lifespan, that tendency should keep rising.
If you truly believe that you are going to live forever, does that change the way you’re living your life right now? Should you invest everything into one career and a lifestyle that a career switch cannot support? Should you invest in a monogamous partnership where you declare “ever lasting love” – or be honest upfront about it [just] being “until it’s not”? Should you – then – invest in children?

While it’s easy to claim that generation Y is the whining generation, the immature generation or that they should just start listening to old wise people, there’s never been a generation growing up to be[come like] their parents.
So far we’ve seen what happens with a generation that seems to know that they have more time to “be”. Either the universe has an unknown way of spreading future knowledge into the present, subconsciously, or the effects will soon become even larger. If you know that you will have both the time and the opportunity to do everything [later], what will you do [now]?

jag ogillar att du distanserar dig från människor när du skriver om dem som generation x och respektive y. Det är lite som att titta på människor på håll och se de stora gemensama dragen men inte individerna. Vilket i sig kan vara väldigt roligt! Men det tyder även på hybris från din sida.
Särskilt när man tänker på hur olika alla människor reagerar på samma miljö.
Det finns andra som har liknande, vad jag tycker det verkar som, vansinniga idéer. De menar att människor nästan känner på sig världens undergång och därför agerar annorlunda med detta i åtanke. Alltså att den dunkla bilden från media om hur samhället ser ut och hela “globaluppvärmning-vi-kommer-alla-dö”-historien påverkat hur människor beter sig. Det är nog en lite konkurrerande teori till vad du tycker är ett beteende hos människor som undermedvetet tror på evigt liv. Komiskt nog skulle man kunna använda det flyktiga “leva i nuet” beteendet som både en effekt av att människor tror sig kunna leva för evigt och att människor tror sig vara den sista levande generationen.
Sen köper jag inte att du länkar detta beteendet till att människor tenderar att skilja sig mer i dagsläget. Skilsmässor har antagligen ökat för att man inte ser på skilsmässa på samma sätt idag som för trettio år sedan. Mao. har bara möjligheten att kunna få skilsmässa gjort att antalet skilsmässor ökat. Det har inte alltid varit en möjlighet för djupt religiösa personer. Du tog även upp att detta enbart hände i i-länder. Kan det ha att göra med den sociala stympning som medföljer skilsmässan i mer religiösa länder? Även den traditionella bilden på “kärnfamiljen” har förändrats.
Jag tycker det verkar vara en mycket troligare anledning.

Your piece on living forever is fascinating and inspires more Kurzweillian speculations to be sure. what kind of world would it be if people, or at least some of them, can live indefinitely… i’m working on a novel about that as a matter of fact. All the best, Bill
